Sometimes, even a glorious beard like mine needs taming (only once a day :D). Of course, I don’t like spending 8-12$ on beard balm or wax, so I make my own. They’re VERY similar; if you have the ingredients and kitchen tools to make one, you can make the other.
The first thing I did is refine wax from comb I harvested from my bees. They’d built some comb where I didn’t want it, so I saved it–glad I did!
I melted it with a couple ounces of water in a double boiler, then let it harden overnight. I scraped away gunk from the top and bottom, then repeated 2-3 times. I finally poured the melted wax through a fine sieve to get the wax 99% pure. That’s good enough for me.
I was shocked at how little wax I ended up with based on the amount of comb I melted. After going through the trouble, I think pure beeswax pellets on Amazon are a pretty good deal.
To make BEARD BALM, combine:
- 3 Tbsp coconut oil
- 3 Tbsp shea butter
- 1 Tbsp beeswax
- Gel from 2 sunflower gel capsules (for vitamin E)
- 10 drops essential oils
Melt the oil and wax. Remove from heat. Add shea butter, gel, and essential oils. Stir until butter melts. Pour into a glass jar or aluminum tin to set overnight. I used cedar (8 drops), rosemary (2), and bergamot (2) oils for a woodsy, manly scent.
You can use other carrier oils like sweet almond, or other butters like cocoa or mango. As long as you stick to roughly the same proportions, you should be fine to experiment away!
That takes care of my beard. My mustache is a little tougher to tame, so I need something slightly different. Enter the wax, which is a bit simpler to make.
To make MUSTACHE WAX, combine:
- 2 Tbsp coconut oil
- 2 Tbsp beeswax
- 5-10 drops essential oils
Melt the oil and wax. Remove from heat. Add essential oils. Stir. Pour into a glass jar or aluminum tin to set overnight. I used peppermint oil for my wax. I’m probably the only one who will smell it and the scent is a favorite of mine–a great way to start the day!
The mustache wax is much more firm than the balm, but with a bit of effort and heat from my finger I scoop enough out no problem.
